PITTSBORO, N.C. A co-op that opened up by making alternative fuel from french fry grease is now North Carolina's first big biodiesel production plant.

Piedmont Biofuels plans to produce a (m) million gallons of biodiesel a year. The Pittsboro plant will convert chicken fat into an alternative fuel with fewer pollutants. It's the first of three productions plants that will operate across the state.

Biodiesel consumption in the United States grew from 25 (m) million gallons per year in 2004 to 78 (m) million gallons in 2005. Production is expected to reach 300 (m) million gallons this year, and 750 (m) million gallons in 2007.

State agencies are North Carolina's largest consumers of biodiesel, burning about five (m) million gallons in cars, trucks and road construction equipment.

Company executive Lyle still says the plant employs 17 people and has been importing biodiesel from other states and reselling about 250-thousand gallons a year.
