Maui-based Pacific Biodiesel will begin construction in October on its tenth biodiesel plant.

The plant will be located in Gonzales, Calif., which is about 50 miles south of Santa Cruz in Northern California.

Pacific Biodiesel is building the plant for California-based Energy Alternative Solutions, one of several clients that have paid Pacific Biodiesel over the past decade to build a biodiesel plant. Owner Kelly King did not disclose the price of the project.

"This is probably the first of several plants that we will build for Energy Alternative Solutions," she said.

King and her husband built their first biodiesel plant on Maui in 1996, and are considered among the world's pioneers in biodiesel technology.

Biodiesel runs inside any diesel engine and can be made from several different "feed stocks," such as soybeans or peanuts. Most of the fuel at the Gonzales plant, however, will be made from imported tallow -- a clear liquid derived from animal fats.

In addition to its plant on Maui, Pacific Biodiesel has a plant on Oahu, in Japan, and throughout the United States. Its Oahu plant, located on Sand Island, sells its fuel for $2.91 -- about 50 cents less per gallon than the average price for diesel on the island.
