BOONE—Presentations and workshops on biodiesel fuel will be presented Sept. 22 and 23 at Appalachian State University’s collaborative biodiesel project located at 161 Dale Street off State Farm Road in Boone.

Participants can sign up for one of two workshops to be offered: Friday, Sept. 22, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. or Saturday, Sept. 23, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Cost is $10 for students and $20 for nonstudents. Space is limited to 10 participants each day.

The workshops are presented by the Boone Sustainable Transportation Club, a student organization at Appalachian.

Biodiesel is an alternative to petroleum-based diesel fuel made from renewable resources such as vegetable oils or animal fats. The biodiesel project at Appalachian is a student-led initiative partially funded by and an award from the Environmental Projection Agency. The project goal is to create a closed loop biodiesel processing facility that provides its own energy needs and recycles its waste products.

An additional goal to create a sustainable biodiesel processor model that can be easily replicated by others.
