People are filling up, the alternative way. That's what more and more drivers are doing according to Ken Ray.

Ray said, “Steadily there has been an increase.”

At John Ray and Sons Fuels in Troy a lone bio-diesel pump has become quite popular in the three months since the big announcement was made that the fuel which is 20 percent soybean oil and 80 percent diesel would be available right in our back yard.

Ray said, “There is more concern over high prices, over the course of the summer especially, folks that are generally concerned about environmental aspects.”

Ray says their station has drawn in everyone from ordinary car owners to big time stars in town for concerts like Crosby Stills Nash and Young.

Ray says drivers have been coming in from all over the state to fill up their vehicles, many using the web to find out where they can get their hands on this increasingly popular type of fuel.

A web site, biodiesel.org, points people to the nearest bio-diesel station. Right now there are only eight in the state, two here in the Capital Region.

But with more local companies actually ordering the fuel in bulk, it could bring up demand.

John Hewitt said, “We're going through 5,000 gallons a week right now.”

John Hewitt of Hewitt trucking and farms in Brunswick says there were numerous factors in switching to bio-diesel for his 10 trucks. But most importantly he says,

“It's a 20 percent mixture so I felt that was 20 percent of my money that wasn't going overseas and staying here in this country and maybe help some other farmer.”

That's why Hewitt thinks this country will eventually have to make the switch to bio-fuels and fuels like it.

“If this is something that'll work today even it's a band-aid it's better than doing nothing,” said Hewitt.

Right now the price for bio-diesel is around $2.94 a gallon, still a little higher than regular gasoline.
