DURHAM -- If recycling and children are the future, then one school has the right idea.
A class of about 15 pupils at the N.C. School of Science and Mathematics is making a nearly 20-gallon batch of biodiesel fuel for one of the school's mini-term classes. The term is a weeklong course where students focus on one subject of choice.
This is the first year the biodiesel project has been offered for the program.
Chemistry instructor Marion Brisk, who proposed the short-term class, said she sometimes has students make small batches of the fuel in her regular courses. She said the process introduces students to the growing need and importance for renewable energy sources, in particular ones that people can create themselves.
"I think that worldwide the concept of biodiesel is you can use your own energy," she said. "If you go on the Internet, there are large groups of people who are doing this in their basement."
Emily Maxwell, a chemistry and biology instructor of chemistry and biology at Science and Math, and Keith Esch, a biochemistry professor at UNC, are also working with the class to make the fuel, which Brisk said ends up costing about 77 cents per gallon.
The class started making the concoction -- a mixture of methanol, potassium, hydroxide, glycerol and leftover food oil from the school's cafeteria -- on Tuesday. The batch will likely be finished on April 18 or 19, when students have come back from their weeklong spring break.
Rachel Puckett, a junior, said the fuel usually only takes a few days to make, but the school break and learning process for the students made the process longer. The fuel normally takes about four days to finish, as it must be washed and dried out three to four times after it's initially mixed.
Puckett said she chose the course because learning about how to reduce pollution and waste benefits everyone.
"Making a positive impact on the environment and knowing the information and the education behind it can't be a bad thing," Puckett said.
"If every person was a little more conscientious about the impact they were making, then our quality of life would be better."
The batch the students make will be used on the school's three diesel vans, and one student said the food oil-based fuel might have even more impact than an environmental one.
"I'm willing to bet that when we put this in our vans and people are behind them, they'll want fast food," said junior Dalton Lennon.
Durham Public Schools and Chatham County Schools are among some of the state systems that have started to use biodiesel in buses and other diesel-powered school vehicles.
Larry Shirley, director of the North Carolina State Energy Office, said teaching students about these sources is needed, as alternative types of energy are becoming some of the only options.
"I think it's a great idea, absolutely excellent, because it exposes the kids to everything from the science to how we can reuse waste grease," he said. "We need to switch the fuels that we're using here in North Carolina, and I can't think of any better way to do it than students learning at their schools."
People can create their own biodiesel machines by looking up the proper type of equipment online, or buying kits that provide the supplies and instructions, as the class did.
But Brisk said people who are not familiar with chemistry should use caution, and take care not to inhale some of the chemicals such as methanol.
Maxwell said the students showed great enthusiasm about the course, and she and Brisk hoped they could turn the one-week venture into something more long term.
"I think we can keep the kids involved every year and sort of keep it ongoing," Maxwell said. "I think there's a broad array of future projects that can come from this."

April 5, 2006
Houston, Texas [RenewableEnergyAccess.com] Nova Energy Holding, Inc. launched a new biodiesel fuel company to design, engineer and construct wholly owned biodiesel refineries in the U.S., and address the production and marketing of biodiesel fuel and glycerin. With two full-scale production facilities currently under construction, the combined production capacity is more than 30 million gallons per year. Nova has $20 million under contract for the completion of these two facilities.

Nova Energy intends to produce biodiesel fuel by using its proprietary, patented process technology to produce high quality biodiesel from animal fats as well as vegetable plant oils. Uniquely, Nova can use multiple, low-cost feedstocks in any combination to produce high quality biodiesel. Biodiesel can be used on a 100 percent basis, or can be blended with between 2 and 20 percent petroleum diesel.

"We are pleased to launch Nova Energy as it addresses three important needs in the U.S. -- reducing environmental pollutants, reducing the nation's dependency on imported crude oil, and meeting the fast-growing demand for biodiesel fuel to power the nation's trucking, rail and marine fleets," said Ken Hern, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for Nova.

"Biodiesel can reduce emissions without compromising diesel engine performance, expand the nation's fuel reserves and enable the company to fulfill its commitment to reduce U.S. energy dependency on outside sources. Nova's unique and proprietary system gives us a decided cost advantage over our competitors and we will use this advantage to significantly grow our business in the future," Hern added.

Nova Energy Holding, Inc., formerly known as Nova Oil, Inc., synthesizes and distributes renewable fuel products. Nova's initial focus will be to construct and operate several biodiesel refineries with production capacity of more than 300 million gallons of fuel on an annual basis.

Within three years Nova intends to construct seven biodiesel refineries ranging from 20 to 50 million gallons per year. All seven refineries will utilize Nova's proprietary, patented process technology, which enables the use of a broader range of lower cost feedstocks.

How to Run Your Car on Used Salad Oil
by Erica Gies

For financial, political and environmental reasons—including the fact that we may soon reach the peak of oil production, after which fossil fuels will get increasingly expensive—Americans are trying out biodiesel, both in their vehicles and (mainly in the Northeast) for home heating.
Biodiesel emits 78 percent less carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions than petroleum diesel, according to the National Biodiesel Board, but it’s not necessarily squeaky green. According to Kathryn Phillips, manager of Environmental Defense’s California Clean Air for Life campaign, it actually increases nitrous oxide (NOX) emissions, which react with other chemicals to create ground-level ozone, or smog, significantly impacting lung development in children.

Triple biofuels dispenser at Baca Street Biofuels Stations. However, Phillips adds that the biodiesel industry is working on methods to reduce NOX via an additive or catalyst. NOX emissions result from the catalytic conversion process and therefore aren’t a problem when biodiesel is used for home heating.

Another area of concern is that biodiesel is often made from genetically engineered (GE) soybeans, and is a product of the industrial agriculture system that results in topsoil loss and fertilizer runoff. Actress and biodiesel advocate Daryl Hannah counsels caution about the developing industry, warning, “It may encourage people to use more pesticides and GM crops. We shouldn’t cut off the nose to spite the face.”

Without workarounds, biodiesel faces cold-weather issues since it becomes unusably gelatinous as the temperature approaches freezing. Still, in spite of its challenges, biodiesel is a far greener alternative than petroleum, according to its advocates. “Particulate matter from diesel is a really bad pollutant and a carcinogen,” says Phillips. And in spite of its long-held reputation as being a premium-cost fuel for elite environmentalists, after shortages caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita the price of biodiesel became quite competitive with standard fuel oil for Northeastern homeowners with oil burners.

Take Action

If you want to use the alternative fuel to wean yourself off Big Oil, step one is to buy a diesel car or truck, since gasoline vehicles can’t burn biodiesel. (However, Hannah points out that gasoline-powered cars can be converted to run on alcohol/ethanol. She’s put the TransAm from her film Kill Bill up on blocks until she gets a chance to do the conversion.)

There are three basic fuels available to biodiesel drivers: B100 (pure, processed biodiesel from retailers), B20 (a blend of 20 percent biodiesel and 80 percent regular petroleum diesel, also available from retailers), and fryer oil (“recycled” oil from restaurants that is not sold commercially).
B100 and B20 can be put directly into any diesel engine. If drivers are unable to find biodiesel (or if it’s too cold to use the higher blends), they can simply switch to standard petroleum diesel. B20, because it is mostly diesel fuel, can be used virtually year-round.

The best solution for using B100 in the winter is to use a heated filter or a tank heater, both of which plumb the coolant system to heat the fuel to 180 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the engine is warmed, it alone can keep the biodiesel at the proper viscosity. Robert Lewis, technical service specialist at fuel filtration products company Racor, says his company sells these devices for $200 to $400. But, he adds, “You still need a second tank with diesel fuel for the starting and shutting down sequence, because you don’t want the oil to gel inside the filter when it gets cold.”

Lewis says he gets the most calls from customers who want to run their vehicles on straight used vegetable oil, also known as SVO. For people willing to mix petroleum with their biodiesel, engine gizmos aren’t necessary. Instead, you can mix your fuel in different concentrations throughout the year, as biodiesel advocate Charris Ford did when he lived in Telluride, Colorado. He used 50 percent petroleum diesel in the winter and 25 percent in the spring and fall, running 100 percent biodiesel only in the summer.

Blended biodiesel fuels sold commercially can be made from recycled oil, the most environmentally friendly option. Using recycled oil consumes a waste product, which boosts its carbon neutrality. But John DeCicco, a senior fellow at Environmental Defense, points out that virgin biodiesel is not necessarily “carbon neutral” as advertised. That claim comes from the fact that the plants grown to make the fuel absorb CO2 as they grow, offsetting the exhaust produced when burned.

“Did you fertilize that plant?” asks DeCicco. “Did you till the field? Did you truck it somewhere? Where did that energy come from? There’s a lot of bookkeeping that has to be done to figure out whether a specific batch of biodiesel is actually carbon neutral.”

Jorah Roussopoulos, co-owner with his partner Andi Rubalcaba of the first solar-powered biodiesel pump in the country in Ben Lomond, California, understands this implicitly. It’s for that reason he stocks recycled B100 at his store whenever he can get it.

Other biodiesel drivers want the freedom to drive up to a restaurant’s grease pit, filter the used fryer oil, and put it directly in their tanks. Worried about the supply? There is an estimated 4.5 billion gallons of used vegetable oil generated every year, according to passionate advocate (and country singer) Willie Nelson. For that capability, you need a conversion kit. Massachusetts-based Greasecar sells one that includes a special biofuel tank, filters, heat exchangers and plumbing. A turn-key conversion costs $1,500, but if you’re mechanically inclined, you can install it yourself for $795. Missouri-based Greasel also makes a kit.

Before you run out and buy that brand-new, diesel-powered VW Passat, you might want to consider warranty issues. Volkswagen currently only approves the use of B5, according to spokesperson Patrick Hespen. (Further, VW diesels are not currently sold in some states because they fail to comply with strict California emission regulations.) General Motors offers only one diesel vehicle in North America, the Duramax 6.6 liter V-8 turbo, and it too only approves the use of B5.

There are only 200 or so biodiesel stations in the country, according to Greg Pahl, author of Biodiesel: Growing a New Energy Economy. So enthusiasts in some communities are forming cooperatives to get their fixes. Still, the stuff isn’t cheap, often selling for a dollar or so more than unleaded gas. Roussopoulos sells his B100 for $3.65 a gallon, a price at which he says he’s losing money. “The whole idea right now is to raise awareness,” he says. “Somebody has to do it.”

Heating Oil Too

Some homeowners in the Northeast are getting biodiesel blended into their home furnace mixes whether they asked for it or not. Oil companies in Connecticut, for instance, are assuring customers that this exotic new fuel won’t damage their boilers. Devine Brothers, a veteran home heating specialist in Norwalk, Connecticut, has taken out billboards, trumpeting the virtues of blended biodiesel, which in a two-year test administered in the Warwick, Rhode Island school system performed better than conventional heating oil in both burner efficiency and emissions.
Customers of Santa Fuel, also Connecticut based, are getting a five percent biodiesel blend at no extra charge. “This is something we believe in as a company,” says general manager Peter Russell. “It’s a renewable product that is good for the environment. Five percent is not a lot, but it’s a great start.”

The Central Connecticut Biodiesel Consumer Cooperative, helmed by mechanical engineer Karl W. Radune, is working to convince consumers that B100 won’t harm their furnaces. Some experts are concerned that B100 will erode the rubber seals in furnace pumps, but Radune says a few dollars worth of Teflon replacements will sidestep the problem.

Environmental concerns, coupled with high fuel-oil prices, are making biodiesel more popular for various uses. Biodiesel production is up markedly across the country, from 18 million gallons in 2002 to 30 million gallons in 2004, according to the National Biodiesel Board.

Soybean oil is the most popular for biodiesel, but canola works well and people are experimenting with other sources. France has distilled excess wine into fuel. A professor at the University of Illinois planted a field trial of a grass called Miscanthus that grows 14 feet tall and has been bred to be sterile, so it won’t go haywire as an invasive species. Roussopoulos mentions certain algaes that produce as much as 50 percent oil and can grow in brackish sewage ponds.

Many options are not yet in play that could further reduce our carbon footprint, but biodiesel pioneers aren’t waiting. They’re driving down that black ribbon of highway, French fry fumes floating in their wake.

Soldiers in Nigeria are being pulled from guarding oil refineries to fight a growing rebellion, prompting pump prices in the United States to spike above $3 a gallon amid concerns for the country's petroleum supply.

The president and his cabinet discussed three options: Accept more Saudi Arabian oil in exchange for ignoring human-rights abuse there, dip into oil reserves here or use the U.S. military to intervene in the dispute.

Although the scenario was fake -- acted out by former CIA Director R. James Woolsey as the president (his cabinet was portrayed by Kalamazoo College and Western Michigan University students and alumni) -- it is plausible today and so are the consequences, Woolsey cautioned.

``A cutoff of oil, even a brief one, sends huge shocks through our economy and the overall international trade system,'' Woolsey said in his keynote address at the PowerShift energy security conference Saturday at WMU's Fetzer Center.

The Kalamazoo event was the first of six nationwide organized by the nonprofit policy group 20/20 Vision. Its goal is to educate citizens about the threat America's oil dependence has on national security, economy, environment and outline options for changing the situation.

Woolsey, who was director of the CIA from 1993 to 1995 and who served posts in the Reagan and first Bush administrations, focused on issues of U.S. oil consumption and dependence for the Virginia-based consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton.

Although his speech focused on national security and terrorism, he said any interruption in the oil supply to the U.S. -- be it weather-related, such as Hurricanes Katrina and Rita last fall that halted Gulf oil production, or a terrorist attack on a major oil pipeline -- would highlight the need to wean ourselves off oil.

According to the Department of Energy, the United States imported most of its 13.5 million barrels of oil a day last year from Canada, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela and Nigeria, in that order. The transportation sector eats up most of the oil, which is why 20/20 Vision is focusing on reducing consumption.

It's calling on Congress to enact a national policy goal of reducing oil consumption by 2.5 million barrels a day during the next 10 years.

To do so, it wants a hike in gas-mileage standards, financial incentives to the auto industry for producing more efficient vehicles and tax breaks for consumers who buy those that run on alternative fuels, Woolsey said. The United States should invest in the bio-fuel industry so drivers have fuel options, such as ethanol, biodiesel and others, when they pull into a gas station, according to Woolsey.

And governments on all levels need to encourage effective mass-transit systems and communities that require less driving and more walking and biking, he added.

Woolsey, who owns two hybrid cars and plans to buy a biodiesel truck, said if global warming isn't a reality now, it's a serious risk that can cause serious damage.

``We've got to buckle down and get something done quickly,'' he said.
